Culture and History
The Église prieurale Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul is the largest religious building in the Allier département. The Musée du Grand site clunisien de Souvigny is housed in the former monastic barns of the priory. Its collections include the Colonne du Zodiaque, carved in the 12th century and a pillar unique in the world. The museum also displays Gothic gisant sculptures associated with Souvigny’s role as the princely necropolis of the Bourbons.
During guided tours, the burial chapels of the Dukes of Bourbon, the Baroque sacristy and the cloister are accessible; tours start at the museum. Another cultural venue is the Auditorium Saint-Marc, which now serves as a cultural space for exhibitions, concerts and conferences.
The Jardin du Prieuré was created in 1994. It combines the French formal garden style with the design of a monastic garden; aromatic, medicinal and ornamental plants are cultivated there.
Nature and Trails
The Circuit pédestre de Souvigny runs through the streets and squares of Souvigny and starts at the central Place Aristide Briand.
South of Souvigny, the PR 23: Circuit de Montaret runs through the bocage landscape of the Queune Valley. The PR 24: Circuit de Champaigue offers views of the Queune Valley and the Côtes Matras.
Walks and Events
The PÉPIT trail “Urbi, étourdi!” starts in Souvigny and is designed as a treasure hunt. A free mobile app gives participants clues and leads them to a treasure.
The Banquet Médiéval combines a procession in historical costumes, a medieval-inspired meal and performances. The Grand Pèlerinage de la Paix de Souvigny has taken place since 2016 and is held on the first Sunday in May. The Foire médiévale de Souvigny offers a free play area for children in the gardens of the Porterie.
