Bon-Encontre: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Bon-Encontre has been a destination for Marian pilgrimages for five centuries. There was an interruption during the Revolution; the pilgrimages mainly take place in May. Renting a holiday apartment in Bon-Encontre can form part of a personal travel itinerary.
Culture
The Sainte-Radegonde church dates partly from the 12th century and was the first and only parish church in Bon-Encontre. It was built on the site of Gallo-Roman remains. A Gallo-Roman mosaic from the 1st century, discovered during excavations in 1997, is displayed on one of the walls. Sainte-Radegonde is also one of the Romanesque churches to be seen along the circular route described.
Further evidence of the history of the buildings can be found in the surrounding area: the Saint-Étienne church in Cassou is a Gothic church from the 13th century. The Château de Castelnoubel was built in the 12th century as a fortified castle, rebuilt in the 14th and 16th centuries, and listed as a historic monument on 8 August 1966. The Château de Plèneselve has an enclosing wall, towers, a keep, moats and a drawbridge, making it a fortified castle. Paradou is a former priory of which only the main building remains; the surviving features also include the monks’ summer promenade.
The monumental statue of the Virgin Mary was erected in 1861, restored in 1880 and raised to 16.5 metres; it guides pilgrims to the sanctuary and is a sight along the circular route described. The statue of the Virgin Mary associated with Bon-Encontre is displayed in a reliquary behind the main altar of the Notre-Dame de Bon-Encontre Basilica. The Saint-Ferréol church can also be seen along the same circular route as one of the Romanesque churches.
