Montgaillard: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

History and Architectural Heritage

The Moulin de Montgaillard was in operation until the end of the 1950s. This former seigneurial mill at the lower end of the village is gradually being restored.

Notre Dame de Pitié was originally a seigneurial chapel and only became the parish church after the Concordat of 1802. It was demolished in 1850 and subsequently rebuilt according to the plans of Monsieur Poydenot from the Château de Prous.

The Prieuré de Saint-Gilles was built at the beginning of the 14th century and was subordinate to Saint-Gilles Abbey in the Diocese of Nîmes. The restored Prieuré de Saint-Gilles became the Saint-Gilles parish church in 1756. Archaeological finds from 1886 showed that it had been built on the ruins of a church dating back to antiquity.

The Association des Compagnons du Patrimoine renovated the washhouse in Montgaillard. At the Lavoir et sa Fontaine, the owner of the adjoining meadow allowed the mayor at the time to build a covered washhouse over an existing washhouse in 1913. The Lavoir et sa Fontaine was used until running water was introduced.

Paths and Surrounding Area

The municipal hiking trails in Montgaillard begin at the town hall and lead downhill along the Chemin du Castéra. They pass through hilly countryside and by several remains restored by the Association des Compagnons du Patrimoine.

Local History

The history of the Marie Hot free-range yellow farm chicken with Label Rouge began at Château Robert. On January 13, 1965, the first Label Rouge in history was awarded for it, bearing the number 01.65.
