In Mimizan, the traces of history date back to an important Benedictine priory from the 12th century. The bell tower porch of the former Sainte-Marie-de-Mimizan church is its last surviving part. The bell tower porch of the Musée-Prieuré de Mimizan has preserved its polychromy and features one of the oldest French depictions of the Apostle James the Elder. The museum area traces the natural and human history of the region from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages.

Culture and History

The Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church is Neogothic and was consecrated on 3 May 1891. Its north chapel contains a gilded wooden statue of the Virgin Mary dating from the 17th century.

The Maison du Patrimoine uses figures of the shepherd and the resin collector to convey the traditional rural society of the Landes. It uses collections, filmed eyewitness accounts and events to explain the relationship between people and their forest. The Maison du Patrimoine offers guided tours by appointment only.

The château is privately owned and not open to the public for visits.
