Mezos: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Mézos has been listed in the Inventaire des Monuments historiques since 1969. It was built at the beginning of the 14th century and is made of local garluche, an iron-rich sandstone from the Landes. The Le Courlis area is protected under the Natura 2000 programme.

Culture and history

The Château de Castéja, which has a medieval appearance, was built on a feudal motte on the border between Mézos and Saint-Julien-en-Born. The grounds are private and cannot be visited. Mézos’s former railway station was located on the Morcenx–Saint-Julien-en-Born line, which belonged to the Voies Ferrées des Landes network.

The Fontaine des Argileyres, also known as the Fontaine des Argilières, is one of Mézos’s historical sights; it is reputed to have dermatological properties. It is located on a former pilgrims’ route to Santiago de Compostela that linked the Chapelle de Bourricos with Buglose via the Chapelle Saint-Pierre. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre once stood along this route used by pilgrims, is located on the Lande de Labat and is said to date from the 11th century. Remains of the Chapelle Saint-Pierre are still visible near the Airial de Plinguet.

Nature and paths

The Parcours pédagogique du Courlis runs through Mézos along the small Le Courlis river, through a Natura 2000 area with lush riverside vegetation typical of wetlands. The trail is approximately 800 metres long and is equipped with information panels that enable visitors to discover the local wildlife. Along the Le Courlis, there are also almost 2 kilometres of developed and signposted paths with illustrated panels for observing and understanding the wildlife and plant life of the gallery forests and riverside vegetation, respectively.

The Circuit du Courlis near Mézos is a 10.2-kilometre route for hiking and mountain biking, with a stated duration of 4 hours and 45 minutes. It frequently crosses waterways and offers a diverse landscape as well as traditional houses of the Landes.

Things to do

The canoeing and kayaking club of the Foyer pour Tous at the Base nautique du Courlis in Mézos is open year-round to people who can swim at least 25 metres.
