Caupenne: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The apse and several furnishings of the Eglise Saint-Martin, built in the 12th century, have survived to the present day, including the apse vault, the chancel vault and two capitals behind the reredos.

Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment will find Caupenne to be a possible destination.

Culture

Twelve furnishings of the Eglise Saint-Martin are protected as Monuments Historiques. The Chapelle Saint-Laurent stands at the end of a rocky spur and overlooks a wide landscape. Its chancel vault is decorated with vivid naïve paintings, while its 18th-century furnishings are protected as Monuments Historiques.

The historic site Abbaye de Pontaut is located in the wider regional surroundings of Caupenne. The historic site Château de Dax, the church Abbaye de Saint-Sever and the church Cathédrale Notre-Dame are also located in this wider regional area.

History

The history of the de Caupenne family is reflected in two different building sites. The family’s first Château de Caupenne was built on a castle mound in the Castet-Bielle district. A second Château de Caupenne was built in the town centre in the 17th century.

The Château de Caupenne is privately owned and cannot be visited. However, it can be viewed from the gate and the village square.

Traditions

The Arènes de Caupenne have a permanent stand overlooking a sand track. Their wooden façade is painted red and white. The existence of the Arènes de Caupenne bears witness to the continuing vitality of this local tradition.

In the Course landaise, almost exclusively cows and heifers are used instead of bulls; the animal is not killed.
