In Dax, the Musée de Borda represents a diverse cultural profile: the museum has been awarded the designation “Musée de France” and holds collections on archaeology, natural history, fine art, graphic art and ethnography.

Those considering Dax as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

Culture

The Musée de Borda presents changing exhibitions on historical, scientific and artistic themes throughout the year in the Chapelle des Carmes, built in 1523. The archaeological crypt in Dax contains a Gallo-Roman basilica; the fully renovated site reopened to the public in September 2024.

The cathedral also preserves an important historical detail: its monumental 13th-century entrance portal is a remnant of the Gothic cathedral that collapsed in 1645. The Gallo-Roman city walls of Dax were built in the 4th century, and around 320 metres remain today.

At Cimetière Saint-Pierre, visitors can freely explore notable graves and works of art; three of them are protected as historic monuments. The Atrium, reopened in 1991, includes a restaurant and an event hall where Dax’s cultural season takes place.

Thermal Tradition

In addition to medically prescribed treatments, the thermal establishments in Dax offer wellness treatments such as massages, water aerobics and baths. The thermal tradition includes 64 °C hot water and natural peloid mud sourced from the laboratories of the municipal water authority.

Nature

The Jardin de Noe has been listed as a historic monument since 1991 and has been awarded the designation “Jardin Remarquable”. It contains more than 1,000 trees as well as the nationally protected fern species Ophioglosse des Açores.

Since 2022, part of the park has been known as the “Jardin de vie”. This area is open to the public free of charge in the afternoons and offers opportunities for reading, relaxing and taking part in activities.

Trails

The “Du haut des remparts” trail is a 2-kilometre circular walk with an estimated duration of one hour and a difficulty level of “very easy”. It is considered an easy route suitable for all groups, passing the main sights of Dax.

Events

The Arènes de Dax can accommodate 8,000 spectators and host bullfights, Landes-style and equestrian events, as well as concerts.

Cuisine

“Savourez Dax” is a two-hour guided tour that combines Dax’s cultural heritage with the cuisine of the Landes and includes meetings with local producers and craftspeople.
