Culture and History

The Church of Sainte-Odile has been listed as a historic monument since 1995.

The Church of Sainte-Odile has preserved a tower, possibly a narthex, dating from the second half of the 12th century, as well as its former choir, which now serves as a side chapel. In 1859, the church was in very poor condition; the municipality therefore decided to build a new nave and a new choir.

The Lapidarium de Wintzfelden is located next to the Church of Wintzfelden. The Lapidarium de Wintzfelden contains a sarcophagus in which the mortal remains of three nuns were buried. It also contains five gravestones decorated with medieval symbols representing the four elements.

The foundations of Schwarzenthann Abbey that can still be seen today include the church, hospice and farm. Schwarzenthann Abbey was founded in 1124 to accommodate a congregation of nuns from Marbach Abbey.

Walking Tour

The Schwarzenthann Discovery Trail traces the history of the abbey through eight information panels on a walking tour lasting around half an hour. In 2024, the Discovery Trail was supplemented with four large-format panels showing 3D views of the virtual reconstruction of the abbey.

The Schwarzenthann Discovery Trail can be reached on foot from Rue des Vosges in Wintzfelden in 30 minutes.

Nature

The Zinnkoepflé massif in the hills above Soultzmatt-Wintzfelden has a warm, dry microclimate that is unique in Alsace.

The dry grasslands on the summit of Zinnkoepflé are designated as a Natura 2000 site; attentive walkers and botanists can observe rare and sensitive animal and plant species there.
