Circular Routes

The 13.4-kilometre blue-marked circular route “Les Lieux-Dits” is part of the Circuit Découverte in Flaxlanden. It leads to Flaxlanden’s most important field names and through the surrounding hills. The circular route begins at the Salle des Sports et de la Culture in Flaxlanden.

The “L’Histoire et le Patrimoine” circular route leads to historic buildings, including some dating from before the Thirty Years’ War. Its starting point is Flaxlanden Town Hall.

Culture

The Grotte de Lourdes was inaugurated on 15 August 1958 to mark the centenary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes.

The Maison vigneronne is a typical winegrower’s house with a large round-arched gateway. The stone storeys date from 1629.

The Church of Saint-Sébastien was built in the 13th century. Its nave, choir and sacristy were rebuilt between 1786 and 1788 according to plans by J.-B. Kléber. Its furnishings include an organ dating from 1863, built by organ maker Jean Frédéric Verschneider.

The presbytery of Flaxlanden is a Sundgau patrician house from the 18th century, dating from 1765. The Maison Landwerlin is a Renaissance house built in 1621. The Maison Meyer is a farmhouse with a traditional covered balcony, known as a “Laube”, and an adjoining barn at the side, together forming a small farm.

History

The former Château de Flaxlanden, a manor house near the church, has been mentioned since 1580 and was restored again after a fire in 1694. The façades, roof, cellar and balustraded staircase of the Château de Flaxlanden are listed as historic monuments.

The Geissberg was the site of fighting between French and German troops on 19 August 1914, at the beginning of the First World War.

Nature

Palmenhardt is home to a south-facing area of tertiary dry grassland containing a remarkable number of endangered plant species.
