Culture and History

The nave of the Saint-Nicolas parish church in Diefmatten was built in 1778 on the site of an earlier chapel. Its main façade features a yellow sandstone portal with a scroll pediment and a central niche. Above it is a projecting hexagonal bell tower with an imperial roof. Inside, visitors can view a painting of Saint Nicholas.

The local history also includes the Maison natale de Jean-Barthélémy Gross. It is the birthplace of Jean-Barthélémy Gross, a priest who was born in 1741 and died in 1800. On January 11, 1767, he began his priestly ministry alongside Abbé Laurentz, the parish priest of Soppe-le-Haut. The building is considered one of the village’s finest half-timbered structures.

Cycling

The cycling route “Balade le long de la Doller, entre vallons et mémoire” passes through Diefmatten, where the church provides a peaceful stopping point. The route is listed as 32 km long, with 157 m of elevation gain and a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. Starting from Pont d’Aspach, the cycling route follows a cycle path along the Doller to Sentheim.

Nature

The Étangs de pêche de Diefmatten consist of two ponds at the exit of the village toward Sternenberg. Fishing for trout is possible there during the cold season, as well as fishing for carp, tench, pike, rudd and sturgeon. Sturgeon must be returned to the water.

The grounds of the Étangs de pêche de Diefmatten include a small on-site refreshment facility, a communal barbecue and sanitary facilities.
