Culture and History

The former Cistercian Abbey of Lucelle includes protected remains of the former enclosure with the main portal, the bridge over the Lucelle, the large fountain at the entrance to the gardens, the gardens with their terraces and the grand staircase, the portal of Abbot Delphis’s house, the original lower sections of the former barn (restaurant) and the former forge (chapel), the former guesthouse with its complete interior furnishings, as well as the ground and the remains contained within it.

The former Cistercian Abbey of Lucelle was founded in 1124 as the first Cistercian abbey in the territory of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1346, it received a Gothic church in place of the Romanesque sanctuary; after a fire in 1699, it was completely rebuilt between 1708 and 1750.

The former Cistercian Abbey of Lucelle is partially protected as a historic monument. The listing took place on 6 February 1996.

The Notre-Dame Chapel was built in 1968 by Abbé Lidy on the site of the former blast furnaces of the Cistercian monks of Lucelle.

Lützel (Abbey: Lützel, Switzerland) is a historic site in the immediate vicinity of Lucelle. The Lützel Monastery, a monastery, is also located nearby. Château de Morimont can be found there as a ruin.
