Culture and History

The Château du Pflixbourg is first mentioned in 1220. The Thurnburg, dating from the 13th century, is now Wintzenheim’s town hall and was long referred to as a “castle”.

In the Logelbach district, the Herzog Chapel is a rare example of French Neo-Gothic architecture in Alsace and is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Also located in Logelbach is the parish church, which was the first church in Alsace and the second in France to be built from reinforced concrete. It is neoclassical in design and decorated with numerous stucco works and moulded ornaments.

Nature

Near La Forge, in Wintzenheim’s municipal forest, lies the Vallon d’Aspach, with three fishponds, a forest house, picnic areas and a botanical educational trail. Starting at the La Forge forest house, the trail follows the cycle path and passes through the forest on an easy hike of around one hour. Four routes ranging from 10 to 34 km are also accessible from the Vallon d’Aspach.

Parc Kiener in La Forge is a 14-hectare mixed garden with a circular path enclosing the historic garden. American tulip trees, sequoias and cedars have been preserved there. These trees represent the range of plants used in the park’s design during the time of gardener and landscape designer Auguste-Napoléon Baumann (1804–1884).

Trails

The “Canton en balade” programme offers family-friendly circular trails that begin in the canton’s ten municipalities. “Balades autour des châteaux” offers four easy circular walks, accessible to everyone, each lasting around 1.5 hours.

“Bicyclette go!” offers two circular routes for exploring the vineyards in the canton of Wintzenheim, as well as family-friendly routes.
