Sewen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Lac de Sewen is one of the rarest glacial overdeepened lakes in the Vosges in Alsace and, according to geologists, is considered the best-preserved. The flora and fauna of Lac de Sewen are protected. Sewen is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. Lac de Sewen can be reached on foot from the village in 15 minutes; parking is available in the church square.

Nature

Walks are possible around Lac de Sewen. The circular route around Lac de Sewen and Lac d’Alfeld begins in the centre of Sewen, passes Lac de Sewen and continues to Lac d’Alfeld. Along the way, it follows marked Club Vosgien trails through a beech and fir forest.

Hiking and Discovery

Sewen has kilometres of hiking trails. A hike of around 40 minutes from the dam of Lac d’Alfeld leads to the chalet and the waterfall cascade, offering views of the Doller Valley. The dam at Lac d’Alfeld was built in 1883 and inaugurated in 1888.

The two-hour walk from the Ferme-auberge du Grand Langenberg leads through a wild, unspoilt forest landscape. The Ferme-auberge du Hinteralfeld can be reached by car; several hiking trails lead to it or from it into the surrounding area. Homemade products such as saucisson, as well as goat, pork and beef, are offered there; the Ferme-auberge du Hinteralfeld also welcomes guests for lunch and dinner.

The Balade ludique à Sewen offers three versions for children aged 4 to 12 and for the whole family. It leads through the streets of the municipality and around Lac de Sewen; puzzles bring the village’s architecture to life.

Culture and History

The Notre-Dame Church in Sewen was consecrated in 1524. Its choir tower is believed to date from the 13th century; the nave was rebuilt at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century.

The cemetery chapel, a former ossuary, has been partially protected as a historic monument since 1921. A statue of the Virgin Mary in the Notre-Dame Church was the subject of a very popular pilgrimage in the 16th and early 17th centuries.
