Guldborgsund Municipality: Holiday accommodation between coast, nature and culture

In Guldborgsund Municipality, 274 km of coastline, protected wetlands, historical attractions and varied trails for hikers and cyclists come together. The landscape is characterised by predominantly flat coastal areas, meadows, reed beds and small lakes. There are also museums, animal parks and cultural attractions that showcase very different sides of the municipality.

Nature

The Bøtø Nor Bird Protection Area is a protected wetland with meadows, reed beds and small lakes. Bøtø Nor is suitable for observing waders, geese, ducks, birds of prey and cranes. Two bird towers offer views across the Bøtø Nor Bird Protection Area; there is also an observation hide at Bøtø Enge.

Another distinct landscape area is Skejten. The area is flat and rugged and has never been used for agriculture. Its features include rare animal and plant species, large glacial erratic boulders and thick old oak trees. Approximately 87,223 hectares are designated in Guldborgsund Municipality, of which 88% are predominantly flat coastal areas.

Coast and water

Guldborgsund Municipality has 21 beaches with bathing water profiles. Along the coast and on the open public waterways, there are opportunities for fishing, including sea trout and mullet. In total, the municipality has more than 500 km of such waterways and 274 km of coastline.

The approximately 15 km-long “Spor Bøtø Nor” hiking trail also leads into the wetland. It is accessible via five different car parks. Another trail, Fuglsang and Skejten, runs along uneven, often wet paths and primitive bridges over the streams that flow through the area and empty into the Guldborgsund.

Culture and history

At the Middelaldercentret, the reconstructed Danish town of Sundkøbing from the 15th century is the main attraction. The historical experience centre showcases medieval crafts, merchants, knight tournaments and demonstrations of medieval weapons.

Museum Obscurum is about a ten-minute walk from Nykøbing Falster railway station. The “I Dronning Sophies Fodspor” walking route also runs through the town’s historic streets. Nykøbing Falster Revyen presents humorous and satirical performances and is one of Denmark’s longest-standing revues.

Den gamle Købmandshandel in Nykøbing F. is a living museum. It was established with the authentic furnishings and stock of the Skottemarke Købmandshandel, which closed in 1987. In Eskilstrup, Danmarks Traktormuseum documents the history of agriculture and technology. On display are an almost complete collection of Danish Bukh tractors, further tractor collections and stationary Bukh engines from 1925 to 1937.

Trails and activities

Sundruten is a 44 km-long, scenic cycling route around Guldborgsund. It passes through forests and estate landscapes. In Nykøbing Falster, Guldborgsund Aqua Sport operates a cable park for wakeboarding and provides beginners with a thorough introduction.

Other attractions include Pangea Park Falster and Krokodille Zoo. At Pangea Park Falster, visitors can experience kangaroos, monkeys, giant tortoises, ponies, donkeys and goats up close. At Krokodille Zoo, visitors can see crocodiles outdoors during the summer season, as well as tayras, clouded leopards and pumas in naturalistic environments.

New trail concepts along the coast are also associated with different statuses. KØSTEN is intended to be established as a 65 km-long recreational experience route along the coast of Falster, from Stubbekøbing via Gedser to Nykøbing Falster. It is planned to be divided into smaller themed stages focusing on history, nature and culture. For Sunday, 28 June, the inauguration of KLANG KØSTEN was announced in Gedser, a five-kilometre artistic audio walk to the southernmost point of Denmark. A free app was intended to convey stories and local voices.
