Hjelm on Guldborgsund – Coast, Cycling Routes and Local History
Hjelm brings together coastal landscapes, distinctive nature experiences and Danish local history within a compact thematic area. The town is located along coastal section S5.07, which stretches across Lolland from Guldborg to Vantore. The same coastal section also includes, among other places, Natura 2000 site no. 173 Smålandsfarvandet north of Lolland, Guldborgsund, Bøtø Nor and Hyllekrog-Rødsand. Those looking for a holiday home in Hjelm are therefore choosing an area where cycling trips, water-based experiences and historical discoveries can be combined.
Coast and Nature Around Hjelm
One distinctive landscape feature is the original, somewhat square-shaped peninsula that projected into Guldborgsund directly in front of the village of Hjelm. The place name also refers to the landscape: Hjelm refers to terrain conditions perceived as resembling the shape of a helmet. The development of the surrounding area also includes the construction of dikes around Majbølle Nor in 1923–25.
Close to Hjelm lies Hjelm Ø, an approximately 2.5-hectare uninhabited island in Guldborgsund. It has sparse vegetation and is an important bird site. During the breeding season, from 15 March to 15 July, staying on or near Hjelm Ø is prohibited. This seasonal restriction is one of the important points to take into account when planning nature-oriented excursions.
Cycling Trips with Different Focuses
For active days during your holiday, Hjelm offers a direct connection to several cycling routes. The 35 km route “Fuglenes fristeder” runs from Majbølle via Hjelm and the Guldborgsund Tunnel to the Majbølle Nor nature reserve. It follows quiet country roads, several of which are equipped with cycle paths. The route is signposted with blue signs; the “fugletårnet” serves as the trail marker.
A special section leads around the Guldborgsund Tunnel. Along the way, there are views of the motorway and Guldborgsund. The main route therefore combines landscape impressions with prominent elements of the transport infrastructure without focusing the tour on a single theme. Another option is “Sundruten”, a scenic cycling route of just over 46 km between Nykøbing Falster, Guldborg and Sundby. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether a shorter, clearly signposted tour or a longer cycling route is better suited to your holiday days.
Harbour, Swimming and Practical Orientation
At Hjelm Bådelaug, swimming is possible from a jetty equipped with a ladder. There are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of Hjelm Bådelaug. Anyone wishing to include this bathing spot in their daily plans should take the journey there into account and not assume that parking is available directly at the Bådelaug.
The Hjelm Havn rest area is a small harbour with a beach, as well as a shelter and camping area with water and toilets. Fresh water can be drawn there along the way. This provision makes Hjelm Havn a practical reference point for a break by the water. Hjelm is 4 km from shopping facilities in Guldborg.
Local History Between School and Library
Hjelm also offers points of connection for visitors who want to get to know the character of a place through its history. A school was built in Hjelm in 1911. The parish library was established in 1944; its 3,400 volumes were distributed among the schools of Hjelm and Soesmarke. Fogdegd. and Rafnegd. are also documented in Hjelm for the year 1682. The place name itself has been recorded in the form Hielm since 1330.
This creates a multifaceted picture: Hjelm is both a place on Guldborgsund, a reference point for cycling routes near which the uninhabited Hjelm Ø is located as an important bird site, and a place with clearly traceable historical features. When looking for a holiday home, you can therefore decide on the focus of your trip: coast and swimming, longer cycling trips, nature observation or a quieter approach to local history.
