Nature experiences at Gedser Odde

Gedser Odde is the southernmost point of Denmark. In spring and autumn, tens of thousands of migratory birds can be observed at Gedser’s southern tip. The Gedser Bird Observatory offers, among other things, bird walks as well as information about birds and the work of the station. The station’s tasks also include ringing birds, primarily in the lighthouse garden by the station and, among other places, in Vesterhave.

Distinctive landscape features are also part of the experience. Sydstenen is a boulder weighing around four tonnes and is believed to be approximately one billion years old. It originated in Sweden and was transported by masses of ice to southern Falster around 15,000 years ago. From Gedser, you can walk along the beach to Gedser Lighthouse. Gedser Lighthouse was completed in 1801 and put into operation in 1802.

Railways, museums and special stories

Gedser Remise is a railway museum offering insights into the golden age of railways. In the old engine-shed buildings, you can experience historic locomotives, railway carriages and authentic working environments. The Remiseexpress runs circular tours through Gedser as well as bookable tours in the local area. Gedser Remise also operates trips with historic trains between Nykøbing F and Gedser Remise during the summer and the Easter holidays.

Gedser Remise also includes the Gule Palæ. The museum is located in a former command post featured in the Olsen Gang film “Olsenbanden på Sporet”. The Sorte Geomuseum offers another perspective on nature and geological history, with fossils, minerals and amber. Depending on your daily itinerary, a stay in Gedser can therefore focus more on technical history, film history or geological finds.

Another special attraction is KLANG KØSTEN. The artistic audio trail was inaugurated in Gedser on Sunday, 28 June. Using a free app, the five-kilometre route conveyed stories and local voices all the way to Denmark’s southernmost point. Gedser Water Tower offers wide views of Denmark’s southern tip, the town of Gedser, the ferry port, the marina and the surrounding area and nature. The tower has seasonal opening arrangements, including summer opening; visits outside the summer season are possible by arrangement.

Getting there and choosing a holiday location

Gedser Odde can be reached by car via the E55. From Gedser, the access route runs via Langgade and Gedser Fyrvej to the lighthouse and the headland. If you are travelling without a car, you can take Movia bus 740 from Nykøbing F. Station towards Gedser Færge; the bus stops at Torvet in Gedser.
