Sandkås between beach coves and coastal paths

Sandkås has a distinctly coastal character: small coves, bathing beaches and paths along the coast define the place. The landscape also offers striking landmarks: Ekkodalen in Almindingen is Bornholm’s largest rift valley. From the cliffs above Opal Lake, you can look out over the surrounding area, the Baltic Sea and the castle ruins of Hammershus. The Hammershus visitor centre offers panoramic views of the castle. At Østerlars Round Church, visitors can enter for a fee and climb up to the roof beams, provided there is no church service underway. Bornholm’s smokehouse tradition

Bornholm’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, and herring has been smoked there ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where smoking is carried out in the traditional way, using open chimneys and alder wood. The two places represent different chapters in the smoking tradition: Gudhjem marks its early beginnings, while the traditional smoking method described here continues in Hasle.

Getting to Bornholm

Bornholm can be reached by ferry, plane, bus or train. The ferry crossing from Ystad in Sweden to Bornholm takes one hour and 20 minutes; check the current timetable before travelling.
