Østerlars Round Church was built around 1150 and is the largest of Bornholm’s four round churches. It is therefore suitable for a stay with an interest in historic buildings.

Geographical Location

Østerlars is located approximately six kilometers south of Gudhjem and five kilometers northwest of Østermarie. As part of the travel region of the island of Bornholm, Østerlars is known within this region for its round church.

Østerlars has an artists’ colony: cultural workers, writers, craftspeople, and painters have settled in the village. Studios and workshops are presented as visitor attractions for those interested in culture.

The round church has three floors and heavily reinforced exterior walls; historically, it also served as a shelter for the residents of the surrounding farms.

Inside the church, the central pillar features medieval frescoes depicting scenes from the life and birth of Jesus Christ, as well as the Last Judgment.

There is also one of Denmark’s highest waterfalls near Østerlars.
