Allinge-Sandvig is characterised by simple churches, a pavilion by the beach and places to explore in the surrounding area. One section of the Kyststien ends here; Bornholm’s nature, culture and smoking tradition also offer a wider travel perspective. Before choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether the town’s character, hiking or regional discoveries should shape your holiday.

Churches and beach pavilion

Allinge Church, also known as St Nicholas Church, is a simple coastal church overlooking the harbour and bay. Sandvig Church is small and bright, with an understated island character. Allinge Church combines its unassuming design with coastal views, while the small, bright church in Sandvig offers a different note.

A wooden pavilion dating from the early 20th century stands on Sandvig Beach. It is considered a landmark and is used for gatherings and events, or serves as a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the sea. The beach thus offers different possibilities: community events and a quiet moment overlooking the sea.

Hiking and scenery nearby

The second stage of the Kyststien ends in Sandvig, Bornholm’s northernmost town. If you would like to include a hiking stage in your holiday plans, this endpoint makes Sandvig a specific place to consider. Hiking therefore has its own place alongside the churches and coastal character.

There are several different points of interest nearby. Moseløkken is Bornholm’s last active granite quarry. It lies in a wooded area between Allinge and Sandvig, right next to the ruins of Hammershus. Hammershus is described as the largest medieval fortress in Scandinavia. The Hammerknuden peninsula near Allinge-Sandvig offers numerous viewpoints. Together, these provide different starting points for planning your trip: scenic views, medieval heritage and an active granite quarry.

Bornholm as a wider travel destination

Beyond Allinge-Sandvig, Bornholm offers a variety of themes for an island stay. Ekkodalen in Almindingen is Bornholm’s largest rift valley. The NaturBornholm experience centre features dinosaurs, live crocodiles, an aquarium and a bison exhibition; the exhibits may change over time. Bornholm’s Medieval Centre is a 15-hectare open-air museum that brings 14th-century Bornholm to life in an engaging, interactive way. These destinations provide a broader Bornholm context alongside the local attractions of Allinge-Sandvig.

Bornholm’s smoking tradition

The island’s food culture also offers a historical point of reference: Bornholm’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, where herring has been smoked ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where smoking is done in the traditional way, using open chimneys and alder wood. Gudhjem represents the beginning of the tradition and the continuation of herring smoking, while Hasle is known for the traditional smoking method described here. If you are interested in regional food culture, this wider look at Bornholm complements the coastal and scenic impressions around Allinge-Sandvig.
