Hovězí: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hovězí lies in a valley formed by the Vsetínská Bečva and its tributaries, the Hořanský and Hovízský streams. To the south of the village rises Mount Filka, reaching an elevation of 769 m. Both details place Hovězí directly within its landscape: the valley is formed by the river and the aforementioned streams, while Filka indicates the southern direction and elevation of the area surrounding the village.

Trails and Elevations

A yellow-marked route begins at Hovězí railway station and leads to Filka. The route is 5.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 340 metres. This clearly identifies the starting point, destination, length and elevation difference of this connection. Marked hiking and cycling trails also lead from Hovězí. In winter, these trails are also used for cross-country skiing.

Cycling Routes

Hovězí is also connected to several longer cycling routes. The Vsetínská Bečva section runs mostly along a cycle path closed to motor traffic. The approximately 30 km section between Vsetín and Velké Karlovice is also suitable for inline skating. The stated length is an approximation, while the entire Vsetínská Bečva section is listed as 56.8 km long.

Another 51 km-long cycling route runs via Vsetín, Ústí, Hovězí, Huslenky, Halenkov, Nový Hrozenkov, Karolinka, Velké Karlovice, Miloňov, Třeštík, Bařiny and Martinák. On the Bečva Bevlava Bečva route, refreshments are available in Hovězí at the weir near Koliba.

Culture and History

The church in Hovězí was built in 1734 as a new masonry building with a wooden tower, replacing an older wooden church. In 1891, the wooden tower, which had become unstable due to the ringing of the bells, was replaced by a masonry tower. Next to the church stands a Baroque stone cross dating from 1792.

A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1776 stands in the village square of Hovězí. The local history also includes the Calvary group, depicting the Virgin Mary and Saint John. It was transferred from Olomouc to Hovězí in 1858.

Festivals and Performances

Hovězí hosts a brass-band showcase, a regional theatre showcase and a two-day showcase of ensembles from across Horní Vsacko. An annual theatre showcase brings together amateur and semi-professional theatre productions.

A traditional masked procession featuring a bear is held; it concludes a firefighters’ ball with the solemn ceremony of the burial of the bass.

Markets and Tastings

The Kateřinský jarmark in Hovězí features market stalls, a traditional pig slaughter, food, the traditional figures of Lucky and devils, a cultural programme and demonstrations of folk crafts. Wine and slivovitz tastings are among the attractions available to visitors in Hovězí.
