Šelešovice: Kotojedka Valley and Archaeology
Šelešovice lies on a gentle slope descending towards the valley of the Kotojedka, also known as the Olšinka. The Kotojedka reaches Šelešovice flowing eastwards. Within the territory of Šelešovice, a stream joins the Kotojedka from the right. The stream in question is not culverted from Cetechovice to Šelešovice. The landscape therefore includes not only the hillside location and the valley, but also a clearly described water system with named tributaries and a preserved open stretch of stream.
When choosing holiday accommodation in Šelešovice, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can serve as different points of comparison. This information can be considered independently of the historical and landscape-related aspects of the place.
Culture and History
The first written mention of Šelešovice dates from 1349. A small fortress once stood in Šelešovice, but it has not survived. Archaeological finds from Šelešovice include a small bronze dagger from the Middle Danubian Tumulus Culture. Several graves from the Hallstatt period of the Lusatian culture have been preserved in Šelešovice. A burial ground in the cadastral area of Šelešovice provides evidence of Slavic settlement. The archaeological site “Pod rozdíly” is identified as a settlement from the MMK II phase. The history of the village thus brings together a medieval written record, the memory of a former fortress and several archaeological classifications. The finds differ both in date and in form: the bronze dagger, burial ground and identified settlement site represent different traces of the past.
Treasure and Remembrance
The Šelešovice Treasure was found in an undeveloped part of Šelešovice. It contains a total of 342 coins and coin fragments, two small fragments of silver jewellery and a larger quantity of silver bars. The coins from this find were located near the historic Hradská cesta trade route, which led from the lower to the middle Pomoraví region. The Šelešovice Treasure is part of the exhibition “Historie ukrytá pod dlažbou města” at the Kroměříž District Museum. The find is therefore connected simultaneously with a specific place in Šelešovice, a historic transport route and a named exhibition in Kroměříž.
From 1838 onwards, a procession was held on 19 June from Šelešovice to the chapel in Nětčice in remembrance of a major fire. In 1920, a stone obelisk was erected as a memorial by the district road. The two details preserve different forms of remembrance: the procession is recorded for a specific day from 1838 onwards, while the obelisk was erected in 1920 as a stone monument by the road.
Transport and Hiking
Šelešovice railway station is located on line 305 between Kroměříž and Zborovice and is part of the integrated transport system. Ticket inspection and ticket sales at Šelešovice railway station take place on the train. The travel information therefore covers both the line connection and the arrangements for ticket inspection and sales.
A 13.6-kilometre route leads through Zdounky, Nětčice, Šelešovice and Soběsuky. It crosses two ridges and offers wide views of Kroměříž and the surrounding area, the Hostýnské vrchy and, above all, the Chřiby. The route connects several places with a distinctive landform and also names the landscape areas that come into view along its course. Its length and the two ridges represent a different focus from the brief information about places and finds in the cultural history section.
