Stáj: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Stáj is located near the historic border between Bohemia and Moravia. The first written mention of the already existing village of Stáj dates back to 1298.
History and Buildings
The original settlement of Stáj probably emerged in the 13th century through the colonization efforts of the Benedictine monastery in Třebíč. Local tradition also refers to the site's past: according to it, guards set up a camp near Stáj on the country road; the place is called Francouzské šance. At Francouzské šance, earthen ramparts are still visible in the forest along the road towards Polná.
A distinctive religious building is the chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. It is Late Baroque in style and has a square floor plan, corner pilasters, a pyramidal roof, an open lantern, and a finial. The chapel stands on a low hill crisscrossed by stone cellars. In the western part of the cadastral area of Stáj, near a junction of hiking trails on the road to Zhoř, there is also a niche chapel.
Landscape
At 617 metres above sea level, Na Vrchu is the highest elevation in the surroundings of Stáj and lies less than one kilometre from the village. The area south of Stáj is bounded by the European Elbe–Danube watershed.
A stream flows through the centre of Stáj and is dammed by several small ponds serving as fire-fighting reservoirs. The watercourse and ponds are therefore an integral part of the village's appearance.
Routes
The Via Czechia Českomoravská stezka route runs through Stáj and turns from the historic border towards Polná. The blue-marked hiking section between Stáj and Polná is difficult to walk and completely impassable by bicycle. There is a shelter on the Stáj–Ochozský potok section.
Stáj has food shops and a bus connection.
