Nížkov: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

In Nížkov, religious buildings, historical wayside markers and cycling connections come together.

History and townscape

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Nížkov was built around 1245 in the Early Gothic style on the site of a wooden church. In 1753–1754, it was remodelled in the Baroque and Classicist styles; a Baroque nave was added at that time. Inside is a wooden Renaissance baptismal font dating from around 1600.

Directly next to the west façade of the Church of Saint Nicholas stands the Nížkov ossuary, dating from 1709. It contains four piles of skulls and bones from almost 8,000 people. Investigations of seven samples from the ossuary showed that six of them date to the Middle Ages, including the 13th century and the period 1307–1363.

Other historical details include the wayside shrine on the road to Sázava, dating from 1748 and representing an example of vernacular Baroque. A similar wayside shrine had stood in Nížkov since 1741; today, a marble cross stands on the original base of the destroyed shrine. In front of the old vicarage in Nížkov there is also a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1869. Several stone crosses stand in the area around Nížkov, most of them dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Červený mlýn has an operational water turbine for generating electricity.

The stone bridge over the Nížkovský potok is also one of the town’s dated landmarks. It is located 100 metres below the village square in the direction of Polná and was built in 1889.

Cycling routes and excursions

The Municipality of Nížkov offers the publication “Okolím Nížkova na kole a pěšky”, featuring excursion tips around Nížkov on foot and by bicycle; it is available at the municipal office.

The municipal excursion recommendation “Rozhledna Rosička – cyklo-stezka 19 – bukové arboretum” is a 21.5-kilometre circular cycling route from Nížkov via Rosička, Sázava, Ronov, Olešenka and Buková back to Nížkov. The cycling route leads to the 645-metre-high Rosičský kopec, where a lookout tower stands.

Another connection is cycle route 4336 Dobronín–Nížkov–Sázava. It runs through the cadastral area of the Municipality of Nížkov and connects Dobronín, Nížkov and Sázava.

Nature and surroundings

Žlutá skála is a natural formation on the left bank of the Sázava, about 1.5 kilometres upstream from Nížkov railway station.
