Hvězdoňovice: History, Landscape and Culture

Hvězdoňovice has been documented in written records since 1371; that year, Oldřich of Heraltice sold half of the village to Bartoš of Rokyténka. Local history, landscape and regional cultural destinations are presented here as distinct areas of focus. The historical traces range from a mill and a former fortress to a cross stone and a memorial in the village centre.

History

The Panský mlýn mill has been documented in Hvězdoňovice since 1776. It originally belonged to the Heraltice estate. It refers to a later phase of the village’s history than the first written mention of the village; the two details mark different points in time.

Only earthworks of Hvězdoňovice Fortress remain on the wooded hill of Na hradiskách west of the village.

According to tradition, three crosses are said to be engraved on the cross stone at the edge of the forest west of Hvězdoňovice, although only two are clearly visible.

Culture

The churches of Svatá Markéta and Svatý Marek are located in the vicinity of Hvězdoňovice. Both destinations broaden the view beyond the immediate local history. In the wider regional surroundings of Hvězdoňovice lies Roštejn Castle [Doupě]. U Svaté Magdalena, a church, is also located in this wider regional area.

The memorial to the fallen stands in the centre of Hvězdoňovice, on the road to Krahulov. It is a granite monument on a sandstone pedestal. The pedestal contains a marble plaque with seven photographs and seven names of fallen soldiers.

Nature

The mountains of Kobylí hlava, Zadní hora, Vrchy (northern elevation) and Vrchy (southern elevation) are located in the vicinity of Hvězdoňovice. The four named elevations form distinct reference points in the surrounding area and already differ by their names: alongside Kobylí hlava and Zadní hora, two different elevations of Vrchy are listed.

The Steklý pond is also used as a swimming pond.
