Culture and History

At the southern edge of the municipality lies the listed Budkov castle complex with an extensive park. Budkov Castle was originally a water castle and was converted into a single-nave Renaissance château with four wings arranged around an enclosed courtyard; the east wing is complemented by a prismatic inhabited entrance tower. The castle park contains a pond with an island and artificial waterways.

The first written references to Budkov date from 1353; Jan z Budkova is named as its first owner. In front of the western main portal of Kostel sv. Martina is an access staircase with seven stone steps and a low parapet wall, decorated with Baroque sculptures of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander.

Landscape

Budkov lies in a broad depression where the Bíhanka rises. To the north, east and west of Budkov rises the Markvartická pahorkatina, which forms part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.

In good visibility, the view from the hills around Budkov extends as far as Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg near Vienna in Austria.

Sacred Sites and Traditions

Farářova kaplička is a small sacred building near a forest. According to a legend, it is associated with the place where a priest froze to death. On the fourth Sunday of Advent, Farářova kaplička is the destination of a recurring pilgrimage from Budkov; this tradition has existed for 24 years.

Getting Around

The Jihlava–Třebíč–Raabs cycle path runs through Budkov.
