Bílý Kámen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bílý Kámen showcases a distinctive interplay of sacred architecture, mining history and protected landscape features within a compact area. The free-standing Chapel of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 18th century and is regarded as a symbol and landmark of the village. Its square floor plan, hipped roof and small four-sided bell tower define its external appearance.

Culture and History

During the chapel’s restoration phase, completed in 2023, the original, richly decorated interior paintings were uncovered, fixed in place, fully retouched and reconstructed in their original form. In front of the eastern façade of the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul, the village chapel of Bílý Kámen, stands an approximately rectangular memorial stone with a smoothed front face and an engraved decorative frame. The year 1754 on the stone probably refers to the surveying of the newly established village.

East of Bílý Kámen, on the road to Jihlava, at the roadside between Bílý Kámen and Vyskytná, stands a medieval reconciliation cross. Its beam edges are bevelled; an engraved relief of a crossbow bolt is mounted on both the front and back. The historic Humpolecká cesta between Humpolec and Jihlava also ran through Bílý Kámen.

In the woodland section between Větrný Jeníkov and Bílý Kámen, earth remains of older roads have been preserved in the form of hollow ways and groups of hollow ways. They may be connected with historical mining.

Mining

The Bílý Kámen mining site represents an initial mining phase, dated approximately to the second half of the 13th century, involving so-called mining “up to daylight”. At the mining site, a 225-metre-long ore vein was followed with a single line of shafts. Twenty-seven shafts or prospecting pits have been preserved, with a diameter of approximately 10 metres and a depth of up to 5 metres.

The Hornická naučná stezka in Jihlava is also relevant to the site’s mining history. The educational trail includes 13 information panels and leads, among other places, to the Bílý Kámen locality.

Landscape

In Bílý Kámen, preserved floodplains of flowing waters are legally protected as important landscape features. The Bílý Kámen area is also home to sites where particularly protected plant and animal species have been found.
