Discover Valkeřice – Holiday Apartments Between Forest, Culture and Kohout

Valkeřice combines a distinctive valley landscape with a nearby history of panoramic views: the Valkeřické Valley is an enclosed valley of the Dolský potok, surrounded by flat, elongated ridges and cones of a volcanic mountain range. Around one third of the cadastral area of Valkeřice is forested; a considerable part consists of permanent grassland. In Valkeřice, the valley shape, forest and permanent grassland come together.

Nature and Landscape

Among the distinctive landscape features are the Znělcové lomy (U lomu). They include partially flooded quarry pits with ponds. In the centre of Valkeřice there is also the remnant of a small hunting chateau, which forms a prominent feature of the landscape. The partially flooded pits with ponds create their own accent alongside the wooded slopes and grassland.

Trails and Views

About 1 km west of Valkeřice, in the surrounding forests, stands the small stone observation tower on Kohout. Kohout is 589 m high; the observation tower was built in 1908 by the Verein Deutsche Turisten association. From Valkeřice, an approximately 1.5 km access trail leads to the summit. The route initially follows the former blue-marked hiking trail, which is now marked as a red riding trail, and then turns left at the former blue-marked junction towards the summit. After its restoration, the observation tower was reopened to the public on 16 April 2011. The different scales of the viewpoint and the access trail help you place the routes around Valkeřice within your own daily plans. For the access trail, both the approximate length and the change between the former trail marking and the current designation are relevant.

History and Village Scenery

The rectory at No. 37 in Valkeřice is a two-storey masonry building with a later two-storey wing on the west side. The village contains traditional log houses, half-timbered houses and several Upper Lusatian houses; most of them are state-protected monuments. Valkeřice was formed by the union of the two settlements of Elkeřice and Pertoltice, which were first mentioned in 1363. In 1700, František Antonín Špork had a three-wing, two-storey chateau built in Valkeřice, allegedly on the site of a former fortified residence; it primarily served as accommodation for the nobility during hunting trips. The union of Elkeřice and Pertoltice belongs to a different historical period than the chateau built in 1700.

Cleaning work and the construction of facilities for all visitors began at the Valkeřické trachytové lomy. An event organised by the Valkeřické trachytové lomy under the name “Opening” is listed for Saturday, 14 May.
