Merboltice – Village Culture, Nature and Panoramic Views

Merboltice is a medieval forest village whose axis is formed by the winding Merboltický potok, formerly called Triebschbach. Characteristic strips of land extend from the large farmsteads to the surrounding ridges, which form the boundary of the municipality. The village lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area.

Culture and Village Structure

The Merboltice Village Conservation Area was designated by Decree No. 413/2004 Coll. of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic on 24 June 2004; the decree entered into force on 1 January 2005.

The municipality of Merboltice and its conservation area extend for approximately four kilometres. The area comprises a linear valley village with agricultural farmsteads above the floodplain of the Merboltický potok, founded in the Middle Ages under hereditary leasehold law, with the farmsteads located approximately 50 to 100 metres apart. Around 15 large wooden agricultural farmsteads and approximately 70 smaller wooden cottages belonging to farmers and craftsmen have been preserved in Merboltice.

The Merboltice bell tower has a stone lower section and a wooden upper section; its brick-built Gothic section dates from the 14th century. The tower houses a small exhibition about the demolished Church of St Catherine. The bell tower is open to visitors on Sundays when the bells are rung at noon.

The recurring Den otevřených podstávkových domů event always takes place on the last Saturday and Sunday in May. The programme includes tours of the oldest houses in Merboltice, demonstrations of traditional crafts and a small market selling locally made products. The Svatokateřinská pouť pilgrimage festival always takes place around 25 November. Culinary competitions are organised in Merboltice as part of many social events.

Nature and Views

The Kamenná hůra Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Merboltice. Beneath the steep northern slopes of Kamenec are ice caves in which ice remains for most of the year.

There is a natural monument near Merboltice featuring a gorge cut deeply into a basalt massif, rapids, rock walls up to 30 metres high and a small waterfall approximately six metres high.

Strážný vrch offers expansive panoramic views of the Krkonoše, Jizera Mountains and Lusatian Mountains, the Ještěd Ridge, Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains with Děčínský Sněžník, nearby Buková hora and other peaks of the České středohoří, including Velké Sedlo and Milešovka. To the south, the view extends to Říp and the peaks of Kokořínsko and Český ráj.

A new wooden observation tower has stood on Strážný vrch since 2006. It has been freely accessible to the public since 2007. Kamenec is currently accessible only to experienced hikers.
