Dolní Poustevna: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Dolní Poustevna has a history dating back to 1241. At the same time, Baroque and Gothic Revival religious buildings, a gently rolling landscape, and established dates and routes for hikers and cyclists shape the character of the town.

Culture and History

The first mention of the place where the village of Dolní Poustevna later arose dates back to 1241. Near the border crossing stands a Baroque Pietà dating from 1748. It is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. The Church of St Michael the Archangel was built in 1854–1855 in the Gothic Revival style; the Church of the Virgin Mary also dates from 1854.

The former Protestant church is part of the town's more recent history. It was completely reconstructed in 2009 and serves as the Centrum setkávání, with a concert and theatre hall as well as an observation tower. The Centrum setkávání hosts exhibitions, lectures, and seminars.

The local economic history is also known beyond the town's borders: Dolní Poustevna was known throughout northern Bohemia and Saxony for its hand-operated paper mill, which operated from 1579 to 1906. The town was also known in these areas for the production of artificial flowers. A railway line has connected Dolní Poustevna since 1904.

Landscape

The area around Dolní Poustevna is a gently rolling landscape with elevation differences of no more than 300 m. There are no pronounced landscape features, while nature and changing woodland areas have been preserved. A distinctive geological formation is Poustevník (Špičák), a 454 m-high basalt hill between Horní Poustevna and Nová Ví­ska. Interesting rock formations lie on its slopes, where the columnar jointing of the basalt is visible in places.

Hiking and Cycling

The traditional Severní stopou tourist hike always takes place in Dolní Poustevna in mid-May. Hiking routes ranging from 5 to 25 km are offered. For cycling, Cycle Route No. 3043 starts at the state border in Dolní Poustevna. In addition, three trail routes are currently open, leading to Rybářská chata.
