In the centre of Staré Křečany stands the Roman Catholic parish church of Saint John of Nepomuk, a monumental Baroque sacred building and a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 3 May 1958. The church was completed in 1741. One of its special features is a so-called bread vault; according to the municipality’s development plan, only four churches in the Czech Republic have such a vault.

Culture and Village Landscapes

The Way of the Cross of Staré Křečany runs along the surrounding wall of the former cemetery by the church in the centre of the village. Picturesque Upper Lusatian houses and half-timbered houses have also been preserved in all parts of the village; most date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are richly clad in slate.

In the district of Kopec stands the Kaufer Cross, a wrought-iron cross from 1804. Depictions of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene painted on sheet metal adorn the cross, whose base is made of sandstone. The Kaufer Cross was restored in 2016. Also in Kopec is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, built in 1809, with an altar painting of the Virgin Mary. The column shrine with a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua commemorates the fatal accident of the miller Johann Zimmer in a quarry in 1707.

In Brtníky, a preserved Way of the Cross leads to the restored chapels of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Sepulchre on Křížový vrch. During the Thirty Years’ War, the Seven Years’ War of 1756 and the Prussian-Austrian War of 1866, locals hid in the surrounding area.

Nature and Rocks

Parts of the municipality of Staré Křečany lie on the western edge of České Švýcarsko National Park. There are 472 climbing routes registered in the Kyjovské údolí and Brtníky areas. To protect rare breeding bird species, climbing is prohibited in the rear Kyjovské údolí and in the valley of the Bílý potok from March to June.

The remains of the medieval rock castle Brtnický hrádek, with a viewpoint, lie near Velký Pruský Tábor on the green-marked hiking trail. Velký Pruský Tábor itself is a large rock overhang on the green-marked trail from Brtníky to the Kyjovské údolí. The Brtnické ledopády are a winter attraction: several-metre-high ice formations of various shapes and colours form on the rock overhangs.

Cycle Routes and the Mandava

A 27 km cycling tour along the Mandava leads from Brtníky via Staré Křečany, Rumburk, Seifhennersdorf and Varnsdorf to Großschönau and is suitable for road bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes. The 34 km moderately difficult cycle route 211 passes through Staré Křečany and runs through the Šluknovský výběžek; mountain bikes and trekking bikes are recommended. The 11 km moderately difficult cycle route 3032 begins in Brtníky, a district of Staré Křečany, and leads via Kopec and the Kyjovské údolí to Kyjov; mountain bikes and trekking bikes are also recommended for this route.

The Mandava rises west of Staré Křečany at an elevation of 460 m; its source was restored by the Klub českých turistů. Along the cycling tour, there is a rest area with seating and a small spring at the source.
