Libočany: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The All Saints Church in Libočany is a single-nave church with a two-towered western façade and an elaborately decorated façade. Its vaults are covered with frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of the saints by J. V. Tschopper. It was built from roughly hewn sandstone blocks arranged in regular horizontal courses and separated from one another by a narrow intermediate layer of red sandstone. The organ also makes the church special: it has two manuals and thirteen stops and is considered the first known organ architecture with five cases in the Czech Republic.

Culture and History

The history of Libočany goes back a long way. The earliest records of the village date from 1226; at that time, Libočany belonged to the property of Doksany Monastery. Several notable figures are also associated with the village: Václav Hájek z Libočan was born in Libočany, the music publisher E. Wetzler came from Libočany, and the writer and first Czech female senator Božena Viková-Kunětická (1862–1934) spent the last twelve years of her life here.

The local cultural heritage includes the Libočany Cultural Centre, which was ceremonially opened on 7 July 1928. It was built on the foundations of former brewery cellars. The old granary, known as the Špýchar, is another defining feature: it dates from 1602, is a stone building with a Baroque gable, and still serves its original purpose today. The historic smithy in Libočany dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Two points are important regarding public access: the Libočany Museum is closed in 2026. Libočany Castle is not accessible to the public. As part of the Hájkovo pochod, it was opened to the public once a year.

Nature

The Zlatník hill, considered a botanically valuable locality, lies in the vicinity of Libočany. The Liboc floodplain landscape, which provides a habitat for protected animals and plants, is also located nearby.

Routes

The 54.2-kilometre Podbořany–Žatec–Podbořany cycle route runs through Libočany. It is easy and suitable for road bikes and trekking bikes. A blue-marked tourist route for pedestrians and cyclists also runs from Žatec to Libočany.
