Jirkov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Jirkov displays its history particularly impressively underground: The Městské historické sklepy were excavated between 1555 and 1595 in a sandstone hill in the town centre. Jirkov’s underground system is the oldest of five comparable underground mining complexes in the Czech Republic. The tour route through the historic cellars was ceremonially opened in May 2007.

Culture and History

The Městská věž has been open to the public as a viewpoint and exhibition space since June 2003. It houses an exhibition dedicated to the name Jiří. It comprises 40 representative exhibits from the fields of visual, dramatic and musical arts, sport, travel, photography and science.

The Jirkov Firefighting Museum presents a permanent exhibition on the development of firefighting technology and the history of the volunteer fire brigade in Jirkov. It also offers an interactive computer game simulating firefighter training, responding to a traffic accident and firefighting. Jirkov’s multimedia city exhibition uses audiovisual projections on sights, prominent figures and historical topics from the past to the present day.

The Kludského vila houses the city library, lecture salons, an exhibition about Karel Kludský, and a recreation area for children and adults. The park of the Kludského vila features arena-shaped pavilions and children’s playgrounds with circus elements. Jirkov Synagogue was built in the Neoclassical style in 1846–1847 and consecrated in 1853 by District Rabbi David Pick from Teplice.

The Děkanský kostel sv. Jiljí stands on the site of an early Gothic fortified church dating from around 1300. It was rebuilt in 1568, with parts of the earlier building being preserved. The cultural walk “Po stopách rodiny Brokofů” leads to Jirkov’s Baroque sculptural heritage. The Jirkov Information Centre provides visitors with information about sights, natural areas, tourism and leisure activities in Jirkov and the surrounding area.

Landscape and Nature

The Telšské údolí runs along the Bělá stream from the western edge of Jirkov via Orasín into the Ore Mountains. It is a suitable destination for hikers and cyclists. Smetanovy sady has an almost forest-like character due to its dense, continuous woodland with several small clearings.

Červený Hrádek Castle Park is located approximately 2 km northeast of Jirkov at the foot of the Ore Mountains and is listed as a cultural monument in the register of immovable cultural monuments. The park contains rare woody plants, including a pointed magnolia tree. Visitors have free access to the castle park, courtyard, historic passageways and Gallery of the Noble Families; the Chapel of St John the Baptist and the castle interiors can be visited with a guide.

Activities

The Climbing Arena in Jirkov has 50 climbing lines and 150 climbing routes, including bouldering routes. It offers climbing lessons with professional instructors and climbing holidays. A cycling tour starts at the Červený Hrádek campsite and outdoor swimming pool, rises from 310 m to 890 m and heads towards the plateau of the Ore Mountains.

Games and Water

Olejomlýnský Park has play elements for children, a street workout area and ramps. The Červený Hrádek campsite and outdoor swimming pool has a large pool with slides as well as a children’s pool with a paddling area.

“Hledá se kmotr” can be played all year round; you should allow at least one and a half hours for it. The geolocation game conveys the history and sights of Jirkov to players in an entertaining way.
