Benešov nad Ploučnicí has a historic centre and is located in the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. The castle complex in the town centre is particularly distinctive: the historic ensemble consists of seven buildings in which two separate castle complexes have been preserved – the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle.

Culture and History

The historic buildings include the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a three-nave Gothic-Renaissance church dating from the 15th century. Parts of the former town fortifications have been preserved on the church. The church also includes the Salhausen Chapel, added later, around which several Renaissance and Baroque tombs can be found.

The main square is home to a 14.6-metre-high Baroque sandstone Marian column dating from 1742. The historic centre itself also tells the story of the town's eventful history: a walk leads through narrow streets whose atmosphere has been shaped by several fires, plague epidemics and military occupations.
