Starý Šachov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Cyklostezka Ploučnice cycle path No. 15 runs through Starý Šachov, connecting the Ústí nad Labem and Liberec regions. As a 43 km cycling tour, the route runs via Děčín, Malá Veleň, Benešov nad Ploučnicí, Starý Šachov, Dolní Police and Horní Police back to Děčín. It is of moderate difficulty and includes 455 metres of elevation gain and loss respectively.

Landscape and Nature

Starý Šachov lies in the valley of the Ploučnice River at an elevation of 235 m. The municipality includes the cadastral areas of Starý Šachov and Malý Šachov. The Ploučnice River flows through Starý Šachov and is an important natural feature of the entire area. Starý Šachov is also located in the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area.

The publicly accessible Kamenná hůra Nature Reserve protects basalt scree slopes, permanent ice holes, rare mosses, and plant and animal communities of the scree slopes and scree forests. On the wooded massif of the 519 m-high Kamenec, it features very extensive accumulations of coarse block scree. A marked hiking trail with views of the scree field runs through the reserve. Starý Šachov is one of the municipalities whose territory is mentioned in connection with the Kamenná hůra Nature Reserve; the reserve concerns the cadastral areas of Malý Šachov, Merboltice and Valkeřice.

The Dolní Ploučnice Natura 2000 site is spatially associated with Starý Šachov. It covers the cadastral area of Starý Šachov and protects habitats and populations of the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), salmon (Salmo salar) and Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra).

Routes and Connections

The landscape around Starý Šachov offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and relaxation in nature. The village is connected to the regional transport network by the Děčín–Benešov nad Ploučnicí–Česká Lípa railway line, which provides connections to the surrounding towns.

Culture and Events

The traditional Pálení čarodějnic event takes place in Starý Šachov on 30 April 2026. At 5:30 p.m., a lantern procession to the sports field starts at the shop; after 6:00 p.m., a witch-burning bonfire is lit there.

A Children's Day was announced for 30 May 2026 at the sports field in Starý Šachov, starting at 2 p.m., with horses, firefighters, quads and other attractions, as well as refreshments for children.
