Sloup in the Moravian Karst: holiday apartments and holiday homes

Sloup is the northern gateway to the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area.

Nature and landscape

The Sloup-Šošůvka Caves are Sloup’s greatest tourist attraction. They form a two-level cave system created by the erosion of the Sloupský potok stream. The freestanding Hřebenáč rock dominates the entrance area of the caves. The cave landscape also includes the Kůlna Cave, an archaeological site where the skeletal remains of a Neanderthal were found.

Culture and pilgrimage

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is a late Baroque pilgrimage church built between 1751 and 1754. Its façade features two mighty towers, each 40 metres high. The Chapel of the Holy Cross, built before 1730, has been preserved as an extension of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. The church vault is decorated with paintings by the Viennese painter Kašpar Sambach.

Trails and discoveries

The Propástka educational trail leads from the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves along the Sloupský potok stream, past Hřebenáč, to Propástka. The caves also offer an adventure route called “In the Footsteps of Nagel”. From Sloup, all the other publicly accessible caves of the Moravian Karst, including the Macocha Gorge, are easily reachable via hiking trails.
