Culture and History

The cemetery gate in Podivín is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The cemetery gate’s grille is a hand-forged iron grille from the 16th century that originally adorned the entrance to the Liechtensteins’ palace theatre in Lednice, which no longer exists. Through its perspective design, the gate creates the visual impression of an infinite space.

The Jewish cemetery in Podivín was established in the second half of the 17th century. Its ceremonial hall is designed in an Oriental Romantic style and has a dome topped with a lantern. From October to March, the Jewish cemetery is closed; during this period, it can be accessed by prior arrangement with the Podivín Municipal Office.

The construction of the Church of St Peter and Paul in Podivín dates back to the first half of the 13th century. The church features an unusual Neo-Gothic design and is visible from the surrounding area. Together with the adjacent rectory and the Baroque statue of Saint Thecla, it is listed in the Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

Nature

Janův hrad was built between 1807 and 1810 as an artificial castle ruin, based on a design by Josef Hardtmuth. The building is situated amid floodplain forests on a promontory of the Stará Dyje and is open to the public both outside and inside.

Traditions and Trails

The Podivínské hody celebrations in honour of St Peter and Paul have been held regularly on 29 June since 1976 and open the series of hody celebrations in Podluží. Their programme includes ceremonial processions and hody festivities.

The easy hiking route “Od vlaku k vlaku – Z Podivína do Ladné” begins at Podivín railway station and ends after just over seven kilometres at a railway halt.
