Plaveč: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Plaveč château complex includes a Romanesque rotunda – a building with a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. At the same time, Plaveč stretches along both banks of the Jevišovka River. The varied valley of the Jevišovka near Plaveč invites visitors to hike and cycle; the bathing beaches on the Výrovice Reservoir are also accessible from Plaveč.

History and Culture

The rotunda in Plaveč is a Late Romanesque building dating from the first half of the 13th century and is already mentioned in written records from 1234. In the 1830s, it was extended with an Empire-style addition, a crypt was built beneath it in 1868, and the building was restored in 2008. The rotunda continues to serve liturgical purposes.

A bell from 1487 can be seen in the open bell tower. It is one of the four oldest bells in the Znojmo District. There is also a special detail on the stone lantern: a stone sculpture with four human faces stands there, looking in the four cardinal directions. The rotunda also contains a gravestone dated 1557 belonging to Mariana Višňovská from Petrovac.

The filial church in Plaveč is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Plaveč Château stands on the site of a former castle complex and is currently used as a retirement home.

Landscape and Nature

The history of the surrounding area includes Lapikus Castle. It was probably built in the second half of the 14th century and is already mentioned as abandoned in 1508. A marked trail leads across a deep ditch carved into the rock to the site of Lapikus Castle.

In the Lapikus area, steep, inaccessible rocky slopes above the Jevišovka provide habitats for rare plant species. There are relatively well-preserved near-natural woodland stands with rare species in the herb layer. Luzula beziehungsweise Hercynian oak-hornbeam forests are particularly characteristic, transitioning into a form intermediate with Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests.

Getting Around

A yellow-marked and a green-marked hiking trail pass through Plaveč. Long-distance cycle route No. 481 from Jeseník to Znojmo also passes through the village.
