Perná lies at the foot of the Pavlovské vrchy hills, between limestone cliffs and vineyards.

Nature and Landscape

The areas adjoining Perná belong to the Pálava Landscape Protected Area. The western part of Perná’s cadastral territory is planted with vineyards as well as apricot and peach orchards. In the parts of the Pálava landscape adjoining Perná, there is a dense network of marked hiking trails, supplemented in many places by educational trail information boards. Numerous protected plant and animal species occur in these adjoining areas.

History and Village Character

The parish Church of Saint Nicholas in Perná was built between 1510 and 1583 on the site of an earlier chapel. The Church of Saint Nicholas has a 42.5-metre-high, four-sided tower with a lower, tower-like circular structure dating from 1767; it also preserves a historic stone baptismal font from the first half of the 15th century.

The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua northwest of Perná was built in 1652. It was associated with famous, heavily attended pilgrimages and was abolished by an imperial decree in 1786. The Trinity group on Perná village square dates from 1865. The Neo-Empire fountain in Perná dates from 1902 and served as a watering trough for horses. The romantic ruins of Sirotčí hrad castle rise above Perná.

Winegrowing and Tradition

Winegrowing in Perná dates back to the 14th century. A wine-breeding station was established in Perná in 1946; in 1979, the breeding of the “Pálava” grape variety was achieved as the first major success at the national level.

The traditional costumed Bartolomějské hody festival takes place in Perná from 21 to 23 August 2026.
