Northeast of the centre of Pavlice, Kostel sv. Filipa a Jakuba stands on a ridge and forms a local visual landmark. The church has a Romanesque-Gothic core. Its church complex is enclosed by a perimeter wall with a Baroque gate decorated with statues by Štěpán Pagán.

Culture and History

The sacred heritage includes the Chapel of St. Anne. Josef Vojna built it in 1887, originally as a family crypt; the original altar is located in the chapel. It is open to the public, and services are still held there twice a year.

Several other sites are part of Pavlice’s cultural heritage: the Holy Trinity ensemble is one of the town’s cultural monuments. A wayside shrine on the road to Boskovštejn is protected as a registered immovable cultural monument. The former coaching inn at house no. 1 in Pavlice is also registered. Pavlický dvůr is designated as a locally significant Baroque farm complex.

Landscape

East of Pavlice, the Pavlické louky meadows were registered as a significant landscape feature in 2000. The meadows lie on both sides of the road to Boskovštejn and consist of natural mesophilic to wetter meadows with grass vegetation typical and significant for southwestern Moravia.

Traces of Prehistory

Near Blažkovský rybník, F. Vildomec discovered evidence in 1930 of a significant settlement of the earliest farmers, with pottery from the Linear Pottery culture. The archaeological finds date to around 5,400 BC, are approximately 7,400 years old, and belong to the Early Neolithic.

Pavlice and Karel Pokorný

During the Thirty Years’ War, Pavlice lay on the Imperial Road, the most important connection between Znojmo and Jihlava. The sculptor Karel Pokorný was born in Pavlice. Among other works, he created “Sbratření” as well as depictions of Božena Němcová and Alois Jirásek.
