Mikulčice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mikulčice is home to the Slovanské hradiště Mikulčice, a well-preserved archaeological site from the period of Great Moravia. The site is a nationally protected cultural monument. At the time, it was an important political and ecclesiastical centre of Great Moravia; the Slavic missionaries Constantine and Methodius may have worked there.

History and Culture

The parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has foundations dating from the 13th century, a nave and chancel from the 15th century, and a tower built in 1701. The church contains a striking, massive altar made from oak trunks found in the bed of the Morava River. In front of the church stands a Baroque statue of St Oldřich.

The Chapel of St Roch at the cemetery is a national cultural monument and is decorated with a painted slovácký žudr. The repaired Lekavých Cross was reinstalled in the park by the church on 23 April 2008.

Exhibitions and Trails

The “LODĚ” exhibition presents two oak monoxyles from the end of the 9th century as well as numerous audiovisual elements; a visit usually takes about 45 minutes. The guided archaeological exhibition “KOSTEL” includes the authentic remains of a 9th-century church, part of a burial ground, and numerous exhibits.

The Chalupa Fanoše Mikuleckého is a museum in his birthplace, with exhibitions about his life and work, furnishings from the first half of the 20th century, and a preserved wooden tobacco-drying shed. During current exhibitions, it is open on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00; outside Sundays, it can be visited by prior telephone arrangement.

The mobile visitor guide Smart Guide offers three routes through the Slovanské hradiště site, with photos, texts, and recordings. After being downloaded in advance, it can be used without mobile data.

The excursion “Za Slovany a Vínečkem bílým” begins on the village green in Mikulčice, leads via the Vinařská podlužácká stezka directly to Slovanské hradiště Mikulčice, and returns to Mikulčice via a blue-marked hiking route. It runs along asphalt roads and field paths, is 18 km long, and has a low difficulty level.

Landscape and Surroundings

The archaeological site has a 30-metre-high observation tower offering views mainly of the early medieval hillfort site and its surroundings; in good visibility, the White Carpathians and the Slovak Little Carpathians can be seen.

In the vicinity of Mikulčice, the Slovanské hradiště site is connected to the Slovak part of the Archaeopark by the Lávka Velké Moravy foot and cycle bridge. The Skařiny nature reserve near Slovanské hradiště includes meanders of the Morava River and an alluvial forest with breeding colonies of white storks and grey herons.

The Mikulčice Tourist Information Centre also offers bicycle rental.

Viticulture and Local History

Mikulčice has a long tradition of viticulture. The Muzeum vinařství a vinohradnictví Mikulčice presents a thematic exhibition on the history of viticulture and the wine industry in a post barn and offers an insight into the operation of its fruit-pressing facility.
