History and village character

The history of Staré Hodějovice goes back a long way. The cadastral area contains archaeological traces from the Early Bronze Age, dated to 1900–1500 BC. A flint core was also found west of the railway line, providing evidence of human presence as early as the Mesolithic.

The village square is home to a renovated Neo-Gothic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dating from 1900. The first written mention of Hodějovice, referred to at the time as Hodowicz, dates from 1407; at that time, the settlement was named as the property of the lords from nearby Vidov.

Nature along the Malše

The Malše forms part of the cadastral boundary of Staré Hodějovice. The Tůně u Špačků Nature Reserve protects remnants of the Malše’s original meandering riverbed in the floodplain, as well as small flooded sand pits.

The Tůně u Špačků Nature Reserve is home to rare and protected plant and animal species, including, in particular, a population of bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus). A crack willow (Salix fragilis) is located in Staré Hodějovice.

Transport links and active pursuits

Staré Hodějovice is connected to České Budějovice by municipal public transport route 11. The České Budějovice–Velenice–border of the Czech Republic railway line runs through the municipality.

HoSPORT in Staré Hodějovice has an indoor climbing wall; an instructor can be arranged by appointment. HoSPORT’s bowling facilities can be booked via an online reservation system, by telephone or by email. The Golf & Sport Club HoSPORT is based at the HoSPORT sports complex in Staré Hodějovice and offers golf academies and training for beginners.

The tennis courts can be reached via an access road from Hodějovická Street.
