Soběslav begins with a striking historical site: Rožmberský hrad was founded in the second half of the 14th century by Jindřich I. z Rožmberka. The reconstructed north wing of the Gothic Rožmberský hrad houses the Soběslav Municipal Library. This brings together medieval founding history and present-day library use in one place.

Culture

Part of the cultural character is Smrčkův dům, the only surviving Renaissance house in Soběslav. The house contains the permanent exhibitions “Life in Blata and Kozácko” and “The Tábor Region Landscape in Fine Art”. The exhibition titles lead from life in Blata and Kozácko to the landscape of the Tábor region in fine art. The same house also contains a memorial hall for the composer Otakar Ostrčil.

Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla was rebuilt from 1493 to 1517 in the style of Rožmberk Late Gothic. Víta is an outstanding Gothic work from the time of Václav IV. and has stained-glass windows, a pictorial Stations of the Cross, and an organ that is still in working order. Thus, views and a longer route stand alongside the historic sites.

Rožmberský hrad and the library can be visited free of charge during guided city tours in July and August, as well as during the library’s opening hours.
