Ober Kniescheklad: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Ober Kniescheklad combines traces of cultural history with cycling routes in Horní Kněžeklady. These traces include a Jan Hus monument, village chapels, a burial mound cemetery, and the medieval fortified site of Tvrziště U kapličky.

Culture and history

A prominent point of reference is the Jan Hus monument in Horní Kněžeklady. It was initiated in connection with the planned celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of the burning of Jan Hus; construction work began in 1915 following a public collection. The pedestal was built by the local mason Matěj Nekola based on a design by the sculptor Švec. The ceremonial unveiling took place in 1921, after Professor Švec had returned from the legions in Russia.

The chapel in Horní Kněžeklady was built in 1916. The village chapel with its bell is regarded as an example of the typical architecture of village chapels around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and features particularly impressive stucco decoration on the façade. The chapel in Horní Kněžeklady has a smooth, white-painted façade with brick-red architectural elements. All cultural events of the municipality take place in the cultural centre in Horní Kněžeklady.

Historical traces

At the southwestern boundary of the Horní Kněžeklady cadastral area lies a burial mound cemetery with two mounds near a crossroads of forest paths. The course of the forest paths largely takes the mounds into account.

The medieval fortified site of Tvrziště U kapličky in the context of Dolní Kněžeklady consists of a central mound surrounded on three sides by the remains of a moat. It lies on a gentle northern slope at the southern edge of the settlement.

Cycling routes

The Zámecká trasa is an 86 km circular route designed for visiting four châteaux. Horní Kněžeklady lies along this route, which runs via Hluboká nad Vltavou, Purkarec, Temelín, Hněvkovice, Týn nad Vltavou, Koloděje nad Lužnicí, Bechyně, Březnice and Poněšice.

Another connection is provided by the signposted 51 km cycling circuit to Borkovická Blata. On both the outward and return journeys, it passes through Horní Kněžeklady.
