Holubov lies in foothill valleys along the Vltava and the Křemžský potok and is part of the Blanský les complex. On the slopes of the Křemžský potok, the Holubovské hadce protected area comprises an open serpentine pine forest. At the same time, Holubovské hadce is a South Bohemian site of the critically endangered serpentine pink (Dianthus carthusianorum subsp. capillifrons). Above the confluence of the Křemžský potok and the Vltava lies Dívčí Kámen Castle; there is a bathing opportunity nearby.

Nature and Landscape

The landscape around Holubov combines the river valleys with the slopes of the Blanský les and the special habitat of Holubovské hadce. The open serpentine pine forest and the occurrence of the critically endangered serpentine pink give this protected area a clearly defined botanical character. Mount Kleť is also located in the immediate vicinity of Holubov. The mountains of Skalka and Břevniště are in the surrounding area, while Mount Vrata lies in the wider regional surroundings of Holubov.

Paths and Orientation

From Holubov, a path follows the Křemžský potok to Dívčí Kámen Castle along a yellow-marked hiking trail. The distance from the car park is 2.5 km. The Blanský les Information Centre in Holubov provides information about natural attractions, tourist attractions and events in the Blanský les and its surroundings.

Culture and History

A rare surviving testimony to the local development of milling from the 16th to the 20th century is the mill complex in Holubov, originally built in the Renaissance style. Three Renaissance exterior walls of the mill building have survived, and their sgraffiti are still partially visible today. The complex also includes a small power station with a Francis turbine dating from 1929.

The Celtic oppidum of Třísov is also one of the area's historical points of reference. In the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, it was an important centre on a trade route connecting Bohemia with the Danube region. The ancient site of Chlumany lies in the wider regional surroundings of Holubov.

Tradition

During the Masopustní průvod in Holubov, both the “růžičková koleda” and the “střapatá koleda” take place. Dancing and singing are performed, while health, happiness and contentment are wished for at the same time.
