Žabovřesky: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

A recurring community tradition in Žabovřesky is Masopust, organised by the Žábácká mládenecká koleda. Events were held in 2015 and 2025; in 2015, Masopust had already reached its seventh edition.

History and traditions

The oldest written mention of Žabovřesky dates from 1334. Žabovřesky, Dehtáře and Radošovice belonged to the Poděhusy fortress; on 26 May 1334, Jan Lucemburský exchanged them with the Rosenbergs for the border castle of Janovice nad Úhlavou.

Local tradition includes the Žabovřeský mill: it is associated with an overnight stay by Jan Žižka on his journey from Poděhusy Castle to Zlatá Koruna. There is also a small bell tower on the village green, which regularly rings the Angelus.

The niche chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Žabovřesky is registered as an immovable cultural monument under registration number 35016/3-618. In nearby Dehtáře, at the Žabovřesky–Břehov crossroads, there is a brick wayside shrine dating from the first half of the 19th century.

Water and nature

The nearby Dehtář pond was flooded in 1479, covers 260 hectares and is now used for fish farming and recreation. The nearby Dehtář Bird Protection Area protects, in particular, the common tern (Sterna hirundo) and the greylag goose (Anser anser).

The municipal history of Žabovřesky connects the place name with numerous ponds, pools and wetlands inhabited by diverse flora and fauna.

At the Dehtář dam, accessible from the settlement of Dehtáře in the municipality of Žabovřesky, there is a bathing area, a small grass beach, a shallow entry into the water and a small car park.

Archaeology

Archaeological remains of an early settlement were discovered at the foot of Vosí vrch. Ceramic finds from the Late Bronze Age, the Hallstatt period, the La Tène period and the Early Middle Ages were excavated in the area around Vosí vrch.

Routes

Cycle route 1083 runs through Žabovřesky. Cycle route 1085 from Holašovice to Zliv and the yellow-marked KČT hiking trail from Hluboká nad Vltavou to Dubné also run along the Dehtář dam.

Events

At the Hasičské Májové hody on 31 May 2025 next to the Žabovřesky cultural centre, visitors could sample food and drinks. Májové hody were announced for 23 May 2026 in Žabovřesky from 2 p.m. at the chapel behind the cultural centre.

A Vítání léta was announced for 20 June 2025 at the Žabovřesky sports complex from 8 p.m.; the Experiment band played for dancing and listening. A Vítání léta was announced for 29 June 2024 from 8 p.m. at the football pitch in Žabovřesky.

Dětský den was announced for 1 June 2024 at the football pitch in Žabovřesky and postponed to 15 June 2024 due to bad weather. A Dětský den was announced for 6 June 2026 at the local pheasantry in Žabovřesky, with competitions, a bouncy castle, face painting and refreshments.
