Chlum u Třeboně combines a historic château complex with Hejtman Pond, extensive forests and notable traces of the region’s craft history. The town reveals itself through a variety of facets: Baroque architecture, a peatland landscape and paths beside the water.
Culture and History
Until 1700, the château in Chlum u Třeboně was a fortress; it was then converted into a single-storey château with a chapel. Today, the château and its park are in very poor condition and require extensive reconstruction.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1737 and 1745 in the High Baroque style. Glassmaking in the surrounding area also has a long history: it dates back to the mid-16th century, while the glassworks at its present location was founded in 1891.
Water and Landscape
Hejtman Pond was created approximately between 1560 and 1570. Today, its facilities include grassy and sandy beaches, gently sloping access to the water, a water slide, diving boards, pedal boat rental and piers. There is also a fire pit on the island.
A wooden footbridge approximately 90 m long leads to the “Ostrůvek u rybníku Hejtman s lávkou” attraction.
Areas in the cadastral district of Chlum u Třeboně belong to the Rašeliniště Pele Nature Reserve. The protected area preserves a peatland habitat in an early stage of development, with numerous plant and animal species associated with it, including several highly or critically endangered species. Třeboňsko has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977 as part of the “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB) Programme.
Paths through the Town and Forest
The forests around Chlum u Třeboně are suitable for hiking and cycling on forest tracks and paved paths. The Mikuláš Ruthard Educational Trail begins at the dam of Hejtman Pond in Chlum u Třeboně and is approximately 9 km long.
The Historical Trail through Chlum runs from the Hejtman – jih campsite along the château complex and the dam of Hejtman Pond. It then continues via the Stations of the Cross by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and past the school to the Dešťová zahrada community garden.
