Cestice: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Above Čestice lies the Kalvárie pilgrimage complex, a listed group of buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The complex includes the central Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance, as well as four Baroque niche chapels with Passion images. A wooden hermitage also stands on the western slope of Kalvárie Hill.

Culture

In Čestice itself, Kostel Stětí Sv. Jana Křtitele reflects several historical phases of construction. The church tower dates from the early 13th century. The eastern section from the triumphal arch onwards, as well as the presbytery and choir, were rebuilt in the Early Gothic style. The wooden Baroque high altar was created in 1737 by the woodcarver Jan Hammer.

Zámek Čestice is an Early Baroque building from the first half of the 17th century and stands on the site of a former fortress. In front of Zámek Čestice stands a stone Renaissance fountain built between 1815 and 1827. In the château, the regional museum displays old agricultural equipment and historical objects related to Čestice.

Landscape

Čestice lies west of Volyně, above the valley of the Peklov stream, in the Šumavské podlesí landscape. The natural character of the locality also includes the Voňavá zahrada garden at the primary and nursery school at Čestice 148. A five-star insect hotel is located there.

Experiences

Machův včelín, a museum dedicated to the legacy of Josef Mach and beekeeping, is located in Krušlov. It contains more than 80 carvings and artistically designed beehives. Groups of four or more people can arrange a guided tour of Machův včelín by telephone in advance outside opening hours. Recurring events include the traditional “Ukončení sezóny” on the last Sunday in October. The Krušlovský včelín z.s. association, which operates Machův včelín, also organises beekeeping courses.

The Včelí stezka educational trail begins above Čestice at a wayside cross in the direction of Kobylka. The Včelí stezka from Čestice to Krušlov is approximately 5 km long and has 14 stations with carved panels providing information about the life of the honeybee. Statek U Pichců is also one of the places to visit in the Čestice district: various farm animals can be seen there by telephone appointment.
