Velký Bor: Church, Pond and Holiday Apartment
The Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in the 13th century, stands in Velký Bor and preserves fragmentary original wall paintings. The history of this place can be read in its buildings and individual details, as well as in its connections to the surrounding regional landscape. Between culture, nature and trails, different perspectives on Velký Bor open up.
Culture and History
The church also retains three bricked-up windows with remnants of trefoil tracery, as well as an Early Gothic portal leading to the vestibule of the sacristy. The tower contains five bells, including the more than 500-year-old Jan bell. The Romanesque castle chapel of Velký Bor is attached to the Baroque hospital.
On the foundations of the demolished castle, Princess Marie of Löwenstein had a hospital with a chapel built in 1765 for retired officials of the estate. In 1869, the municipality bought the former hospital building and established a school there.
Another stone monument is the Kříž u Benatky wayside cross in Velký Bor. It is made of granite and bears the barely legible year 1843. You can view the site on several levels and distinguish between architectural forms, sacred details and historical uses.
