Vřeskovice: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Vřeskovice combines notable traces of its history with a clearly structured landscape. The protected complex of the Church of St. John the Baptist comprises the church, a mortuary, a bell tower and the associated grounds.

Culture and history

On the southern side of the Church of St. John the Baptist is a bricked-up early Gothic portal. The history of the former Vřeskovice fortress can also still be traced in the village: it stood behind the school building; a low stone wall is still visible today at House No. 38, which was built there.

A branch of the Drslaviců family built the Vřeskovice fortress as its seat. In 1455, the Lords of Roupov incorporated the Vřeskovice fortress, together with Krásný Úpor and Mstice, into their domain.

Landscape

Vřeskovice lies in a hollow that opens eastwards towards Borovy. To the north, west and south, the village is bordered by wooded hills: Míchalice (483 m), Holý vrch (474 m), Kobylnice (482 m), Ostrý vrch (520 m), Kněžhora (491 m), Stříbrnice (538 m) and Stramchý (541 m).

Historically, the old church of Vřeskovice stood at the end of a spur, both sides of which dropped fairly steeply.

Activities and local traditions

The sports facility of Tělovýchovná jednota Vřeskovice can also be used by non-members for volleyball and football tennis. Vřeskovická šlápota is a traditional New Year's hiking day.

There is a restaurant in the Vřeskovice cultural centre.
