Merklín: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Merklín combines a local history that has developed over centuries with notable buildings and an expansive landscape. As early as its first written mention in 1356, Merklín was a small town with a parish church and fortress.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Nicholas, extensively remodelled at the end of the 17th century, is at the centre of the historic sites. A Baroque parish house was built as part of its complex in 1712; the statue of Saint Florian dates from 1765. The Merklín chateau complex is a characteristic example of a rural feudal manor. It comprises the chateau buildings, an extensive farmyard, a park, chateau cellars and a large stone barn.

Outside Merklín, the Bijadla Barn, a Baroque barn, stands in a farmyard. Its original Gothic structure and later Neoclassical alterations are still visible; the building was converted from a church into a manorial barn. The historic settlement of Bijadla is also home to the former church dedicated to Saint Lawrence, first documented in writing in 1369.

Landscape and Nature

The 35-hectare Merklínský rybník pond lies southeast of Merklín. The green-marked hiking trail 1430 runs around the pond, from Roupov to Staňkov and onwards. The body of water is thus connected to a signposted route that extends beyond the immediate area of the town.

In Bijadla, the educational trail was created on the grounds of a former agricultural cooperative in the historic settlement of Bijadla in Merklín near Přeštice. The outdoor facilities include areas where living wild animals native to the region can be observed: red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar, pheasants, ducks and wild rabbits.

Routes and Connections

The CT 3 cycle route runs through Merklín on the route from Prague to Kdyně and continues towards Regensburg and Munich.

Merklín has no railway station, and no railway line runs in the immediate vicinity. By bus, you can travel to Přeštice, Stod or Staňkov to use train connections there.
